“Ideologies separate us. Dreams and anguish bring us together.”
― Eugène Ionesco
WUDs Presents Rhinoceros, Eugene Ionesco’s blazing satire about community, idealism, and mob mentality. Set in a provincial French town in the 1950s, the play follows the lives of the bewildered inhabitants as they witness their friends and colleagues swiftly succumb to ‘rhinoceritis’, a violent metamorphosis into a crude animalistic counterpart. Though at first the characters greet this outbreak with fear and suspicion, soon discussion turns to whether the epidemic is in fact happening at all, and indeed if it is, if losing one’s humanity is actually such a bad thing. Written first as a response to the spread of fascism and anti-Semitism across Europe on the early 20th Century, the often hilarious and sometimes shockingly dark comedy remains as fiercely relevant as ever in today’s world.
Rhinoceros will be performed in Week 9 of this term, with audition extracts coming soon.
